Pretty’s journey has been marked by extraordinary hardship.

Her mother became pregnant while still in Primary School and Pretty’s father – who never attended school himself – was unable to provide support. When Pretty was just one, her mother left her in the care of her paternal grandparents, and has not been seen since.

Pretty’s father works occasionally as a bricklayer and struggles with alcohol. The limited income he generates goes entirely to this addiction, leaving nothing to support his daughter’s basic needs, including education.

Despite these circumstances, Pretty has achieved something remarkable: she is the first child in her family to attend school.  This fact illustrates both the depth of poverty in her family line and the transformative power of education.
